Une goutte dans l’océan (a drop in the ocean) : a pop ballad song

Released in December 2021, this song in French, “Une goutte dans l’océan”, was my first single.

In fact, I had already released an album just before that. But the way I had done it, in an ancient language, just wasn't a good idea. It wasn't the right target, and it wasn't the right approach either. So I deleted the release later.

At that point, I was just starting out on my solo journey. I wanted my musical work to be heard, but I also needed to keep a low profile for the time being. Amid all the chaos swirling in my head, I was eager to find my path, but I was also afraid of not being able to fit in. I was facing the artist's paradox : staying true while fulfilling expectations.

Deep down, I was feeling sort of spaced out.

I was aware that I was but a drop in the ocean. I started singing that line, and I thought that we were all like drops of water, and that's why there was an ocean. Every drop is important.

There was something simple about the rhymes that followed. I felt like it was in order with the great, timeless, universal cycle of life. Just a moment ago, I was spinning around. The next moment, there was a loop between the sky and Earth.

I know, I've got a very cinematic imagination.

My creativity took priority over my questions, and that almost naive simplicity was exactly what I needed. The melody came to me as I was writing the poem, and that's the one I developed into the song. I had just been doing some recording experiments with percussive sounds of everyday objects, and that inspired me to create handmade music using my guitar in various ways (I did add some synth sounds, though).

The single “Une goutte dans l'océan” was released on December 19, 2021: a pop ballad about each person’s place, between insignificance and importance, seen through the water cycle.

Two years later, I recorded it a second time with a different instrumental arrangement to include it on my album "Les chemins et l'eau", where I felt it belonged.
